IT and software companies in Mauritius: a buyer’s guide

Search for IT companies in Mauritius and you get long directory lists that mix call centres, hardware resellers, software houses and one-person studios. This guide sorts them into kinds, so you know which kind your project needs before you compare names.

The short answer

“IT company” covers very different businesses in Mauritius. Before comparing companies, decide which of these you need:

Kind of companyWhat it doesChoose it when
Custom software houseDesigns and builds software for your business: web apps, mobile apps, portals, dashboards, integrations. No ready-made product fits the way you work, or you need systems to talk to each other.
Web and digital agencyWebsites, online stores, SEO and often branding, with maintenance after launch.Your need is a website or store that brings in enquiries or sales.
BPO and offshore delivery centreRuns processes for you at scale: contact centres, back-office work, support desks, outsourced development teams. You have a large, repeatable workload and your own managers to direct it.
Product (software) companySells its own software, usually as a monthly subscription.A ready-made tool covers most of what you need.
IT reseller, integrator or managed service providerSupplies and runs hardware, networks, licences, cloud and security. The problem is your infrastructure: computers, servers, email, backups, cybersecurity.
Freelancer or small consultancyOne specialist or a small team for a defined job.The task is short and well defined, and you can manage it yourself.

Many companies do more than one of these. What matters is which one is their core work, because that is where their team, processes and experience are.

How the sector is organised

The Economic Development Board of Mauritius, which promotes the sector to investors, groups ICT activity into segments: business process outsourcing (contact centres, help desks, technical support), IT outsourcing (software, web and mobile app development, infrastructure management, application maintenance), knowledge process outsourcing (financial research, data analytics, business intelligence), IT services (data centres, cloud, cybersecurity auditing, consulting) and digital content (animation, e-learning, games). These segments explain why a list of IT companies is so mixed: it puts businesses from all of them side by side.

Custom software houses

A software house builds what does not exist off the shelf: a booking platform, a client portal, a field app for staff, a dashboard that pulls data from several systems, an integration between your accounting and your CRM. The work starts with understanding your process, then a written scope, then design, development, testing and maintenance.

Ask: which live systems they have built that you can see, who will build yours, whether the code and accounts end up in your name, and how they handle personal data under the Data Protection Act 2017.

Web and digital agencies

Agencies build websites and online stores, and usually handle SEO, content and maintenance. Some only design and pass the build to someone else; others design, develop and host in-house. For a business website, an agency is usually the right kind of company. Our guide on how to choose a web developer in Mauritius has a full checklist.

Ask: for live sites you can open on your phone, who writes the code, whose name the domain and hosting are in, and what maintenance after launch includes.

BPO and offshore delivery centres

Mauritius has an established outsourcing industry serving companies abroad. The island works in English and French, and its time zone (UTC+4) overlaps the European working day. These centres run contact centres, support desks and back-office work, and some supply teams of developers who work under your direction.

Choose one when you have volume and your own managers. Avoid one for a single project with no one on your side to write specifications and review the work: an outsourced team does what it is told, so someone has to tell it.

Product companies

Product companies sell their own software, from accounting and payroll to booking, rental and messaging tools. A good product is usually faster and cheaper than custom software for a standard process. The questions are whether it fits how you actually work, whether your data can be exported if you leave, and where it is hosted.

A practical approach is to start with a product and build custom only for what the product cannot do, connected to it rather than replacing it.

IT resellers, integrators and managed service providers

These companies supply and look after infrastructure: laptops and servers, networks and Wi-Fi, Microsoft or Google workspace licences, cloud hosting, backups, firewalls and cybersecurity. If your problem is that the office network is slow or email keeps failing, this is the kind of company you need, not a software house.

Freelancers and small consultancies

A good freelancer is ideal for a short, defined task: a fix, a small site, one integration, a security review. The risk is dependence on one person for something your business relies on every day. Ask what happens when they are unavailable, and keep every account in your own name.

Which kind do you need?

  • A website or online store that brings in business: a web agency, or a software house that also builds websites.
  • Staff still run a process on WhatsApp, paper or spreadsheets: first look for a product that fits; if none does, a custom software house.
  • Several systems that do not talk to each other: a software house that does integrations.
  • Data spread across tools, and no clear view of the business: a software house that builds dashboards.
  • A large volume of calls, tickets or back-office tasks: a BPO centre.
  • Slow network, unreliable email, no backups: an IT integrator or managed service provider.

How to use directory lists

Directories and “top companies” lists are a useful start for names, but treat them with care. Some rank sponsored listings first, many profiles have only a handful of reviews, and some list companies headquartered elsewhere that serve Mauritius from abroad. Use the list to build a shortlist, then check each company yourself.

How to check a company before you sign

  1. It is a registered company. Look up its name or Business Registration Number (BRN) in the Corporate and Business Registration Department online search.
  2. You can see live work. Systems, apps or sites you can open, not only screenshots.
  3. The work is done in-house, or you are told who the subcontractor is.
  4. Its reviews are specific. Read its Google reviews for what was built and how problems were handled.
  5. Ownership is in writing: the code, the domain, the cloud and store accounts end up in your name.
  6. Personal data is handled properly. If it processes your customers’ data, it acts as your processor under the Data Protection Act 2017; ask how the data is secured and where it is stored.
  7. You get a fixed written quote with scope, timeline and maintenance as separate lines.
  8. Support is clear: working hours, language, who answers and how fast.

IT companies in Ebene

Ebene, between Port Louis and Curepipe, is one of the island’s main business districts, and Cybercity Ebene is where many companies, ours included, have their offices. Being in Ebene says nothing on its own about quality, but it does make it easy to meet a company in person before you sign. Ask for a meeting by appointment, and use the checklist above in that meeting.

Where Artover fits

We are a custom software house and web agency in Cybercity Ebene: websites and online stores, iOS and Android apps, business dashboards and portals, integrations and AI automation, built and maintained by our own team in English and French. We also make our own ready-made products, listed on our software page, so we can tell you honestly when a product fits better than a custom build.

We do not run a contact centre. If you need one, or office hardware and networks, a BPO centre or an IT integrator is the right kind of company. For everything else, see web development in Ebene, mobile app development and business dashboards, or send us your brief through the quote form. You receive a fixed written quote after a free discovery call.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an IT company and a software company in Mauritius?

“IT company” is the broad term: it includes outsourcing centres, hardware and network integrators, managed service providers and software developers. A software company either builds custom software for clients or sells its own product. Decide which kind of help you need before comparing names.

Should I choose a software house or a BPO centre?

A software house suits a defined project, such as an app, a portal or an integration, delivered against a written scope. A BPO or offshore centre suits a large, ongoing workload that your own managers direct, such as support, back-office work or a team of developers.

How do I check that an IT company in Mauritius is legitimate?

Look up its name or Business Registration Number in the Corporate and Business Registration Department’s online search, ask for live work you can open, read its Google reviews for detail, and make sure ownership of the code and accounts is written into the contract.

Does the Data Protection Act 2017 apply to my IT provider?

Yes, when the provider handles personal data for you, such as your customers’ details in an app or a CRM. Your business remains the controller and the provider acts as processor. Ask how the data is secured, where it is stored and what happens in case of a breach.

Is ready-made software better than custom software?

For a standard process, a ready-made product is usually faster and cheaper. Custom software is worth it when no product fits how you work, or when it connects systems a product cannot. A common approach is a product for the standard part and custom work for the rest.
